Robert Scheer - Free Thought & Self-Censorship

Robert Scheer is the former editor of Ramparts magazine,. A veteran investigative journalist, he is the editor-in-chief at TruthDig.com. He is author of They Know Everything About You: How Data-Collecting Corporations and Snooping Government Agencies are Destroying Democracy.

When we remember exposes of government surveillance over the last fifty years, we might recall Ramparts magazine's 1967 revelations that the CIA was violating its charter by spying within the United States. In more recent years we have releases of a huge number of official documents by Edward Snowden, as reported by Glenn Greenwald in The Guardian. And the earlier tranches by Chelsea Manning thatWikiLeaks posted on the Internet let the entire world know what governments and their corporate partners have really been up to. In 2015, eight hundred years after the signing of the Magna Carta in England, prohibiting arbitrary power over people, is it fair to ask: Are we post-Magna Carta? In the United States, has the public and private sector created a post-constitutional system? What are the effects on free thought and the exchange of ideas?
