Audio from Julian Aguon and two live guests from the Philippine women's movement in the U.S.

Live in-station with Paul Roland and two guests from Gabriela Portland, the local chapter of the Philippine women's movement, Gabriela.

Opening audio: Interview with Julian Aguon, an Indigenous human rights lawyer and writer from Guam, on Democracy Now:

Aguon will be in Portland on October 3, 7 p.m. at Powell's downtown talking about his life, work  and struggle by way of his new book, No Country for Eight Spot Butterflies.

Both Guam and the Philippines have been forced to play pivotal roles in the projection of United States economic and military power into the Pacific and in the world. Guam is still a colonized territory of the United States, and the Philippines was in the past and continues to be in a stragegic position in the geopolitical strategies and objectives of the U.S. and China.

Angelica Lim is a member of Gabriela Portland, and the International Relations officer of Gabriela USA. Lani Paguio is queer, nonbinary youth organizer and is the Vice Chair of Anakbayan East Portland. They are both members of Bayan Portland, an overseas progressive alliance of Filipinos for national democracy with a socialist perspective in the Philippines. Reach out to Bayan Portland at bayan.usa.pdx@gmail.com

They'll discuss new Philippine president (and son of former dictater Ferdinand) Marcos’ Jr. 's rising military budget and his plans for the Philippines’ economy, and how Filipino activists in Oregon and in the Philippines are fighting back.”
