On this edition of KBOO News in Depth:
"A complete betrayal," is what the League of Women Voters called Oregon House Bill 4018. The bill in the Oregon legislature seems innocuous enough on its face, a one page document requesting a report from the Secretary of State. But over 90 pages of amendments tell a different story, one that would majorly change the landmark campaign finance regulation the state legislature passed in 2024.
That's the betrayal the League of Women Voters and other good government groups are talking about.
Without campaign contribution limits, Oregon has made a name for itself as a state with seriously expensive elections -- the price of which grows every election cycle. In 2024, good government groups planned for a statewide ballot measure to overhaul the state's campaign finance regulation. State political leaders pushed them not to, in exchange for the 2024 law that passed, creating contribution limits and disclosure requirements to take effect in a couple of years.
