Trombonists Melba Liston and JJ Johnson rememered and celebrated
Melba Liston was the only woman horn player
to perform with leading jazz groups
during the 1940s and 1950s.
She was also a prominant composer and music educator.
JJ Johnson was known as the first jazz trombonist
to successfully adapt his instrument to bebop in the 1940s.
He remained a dominant presence throughout the 1990s.
Today we will hear one of his last achievements,
J.J. Johnson Brass Orchestra, from 1996.
