On this edition of Century: Lawyers, Guns, and Marijuana.
The Supreme Court is currently considering the case of US v. Hemani. Ali Danial Hemani is a Texas man who was arrested by the FBI in 2022 for possession of about two ounces of marijuana, about a quarter ounce of cocaine, and a handgun. Federal law prohibits people who are addicted to, or habitual users of, illegal drugs from possessing firearms. The question before the Court is whether in this case that law violates the Second Amendment of the Constitution regarding the right to bear arms. The Court heard oral arguments on the Hemani case on March 2. This week on Century we listen to opening arguments and some of the questioning by Justices. Sarah M. Harris, Principal Deputy Solicitor General at the Department of Justice, appears for the government and Erin E. Murphy, Esquire, represents Mr. Hemani.
