The Rhythm of Community: Portland Music Insider Meets Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle
The air in downtown Newberg was charged with a rare kind of soulful electricity on July 10, 2025, as the Tunes on Tuesday concert series hosted a homecoming for one of its own. Portland Music Insider (PMI) was on the ground at the Chehalem Cultural Center to capture an exclusive interview with Newberg native Ben Rice and his powerhouse ensemble, The PDX Hustle.
This interview, a cornerstone of PMI’s mission to spotlight the Northwest’s vibrant music scene, was made possible through a collaborative effort with KBOO Radio. As a key partner in this project, KBOO continues to champion local artists by bringing their stories and raw performances to a wider broadcast audience.
A Masterclass in "Roots Stew"
During the sit-down, Ben Rice shared insights into the evolution of The PDX Hustle, a six-piece band that expands on his blues-trio foundations by adding a rich "sonic palette" of horns and keyboards. Rice’s signature "Roots Stew"—a blend of delta blues, soul, and rockabilly—is deeply influenced by his parents' record collection, ranging from Al Green to AC/DC.
Voices from the Crowd
The true magic of the afternoon, however, was reflected in the faces of the community. Attendees at the Tunes on Tuesday event described the performance as more than just a concert; it was a revival. One longtime resident noted that seeing Rice return to Newberg felt like a "full-circle moment for the town," while others highlighted the high-energy horn arrangements that transformed the plaza into an open-air dance floor.
The synergy between the band and the audience was palpable, proving that the Portland Music Insider interview project isn't just about the artists—it’s about the community that sustains them.
